After playing around with Media Center for a little bit I was able to get it to work. I thought I'd write up a little step-by-step tutorial for anyone who might be having some problems. This is specifically instructed for Windows and movie files. I've also included a tutorial on how to connect your PSP to your PS3 via Remote Play (so you can listen to the songs and watch the videos you transfer onto your PS3 from your PSP)

1) Download and open PS3 Media Center X (it's a webbrowser with your local IP followed by :8192)

2) Download PS3 Video Converter

3) Using PS3 Video Converter, pick a video you would like to convert into MPEG-4 (AVC) This is the default option so you shouldn't need to play with any settings

4) Take the newly created .mp4 file (Default save location is as follows: C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Video Converter\Videos\PS3\MPEG4-AVC) and make a new folder somewhere in the C:\Documents and Settings folder and put the .mp4 file in that folder. For example, I made a folder called PS3. So... C:\Documents and Settings\PS3 is where the .mp4 should be in. Note: Default "approved" folder is Documents and Settings. To broaden your download folders, on the Media Center, go to Settings > Software > Edit Settings, then click the "click here" hypertext. Manually enter in the directory you want approved. For example, C:\My Stuff\ will allow all files and folders within "My Stuff" to be downloaded.

5) Using your PS3 now, go to the web browser and type in your local IP followed by a colon with port 8192. For example (http://192.168.1.3:8192) Your Local IP will probably not match those numbers so you need to look at the URL of your Media Center X and match those numbers up. Note: Be sure to put in the "http://" Otherwise it may not connect and you will end up at about:blank

6) If done correctly, you should be able to connect to the Media Center X via your PS3 web browser. Once you're able to connect to Media Center X from your PS3, go to "My Files" then go to the file you made earlier with the .mp4 in it (under C:\Documents and Settings) (my folder was called PS3) and open up the .mp4 file. Doing so should prompt you to DL the file to the PS3's hard drive.

7) The file will save to the respective position in the PS3 main bar. All videos will be under the "Video" tab, all music under "Music"... you get the idea =D

I'm bored so I'm gonna write up a little step-by-step instruction on how to connect your PSP to your PS3 so you can remotely listen to music or watch videos that are stored on your PS3 from your PSP.

1) On the PS3 Menu go to Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings

2) Choose Wireless, then for the next option choose Enter Manually.

3) You will get a window saying SSID. Rename it to whatever you want. For example, I named mine PS3

4) For WLAN Security Settings choose WPA-PSK (AES)

5) Another window will ask you for a WPA key. This is an 8-letter password. Make it up and don't forget it. For an example I will use the password doggcatt. Choose easy, then save when you're done.

6) Using your PSP now, we're going to do the same thing we just did on the PS3 to the PSP. Go to Settings > Network settings > Infrastructure Mode.

7) Go to [New Connection] and hit X. Go to WLAN Settings and hit Enter Maually. It's going to ask you for an SSID. Remember the one you just made for the PS3? Use the same SSID name here. My Example SSID was PS3.

8) On the next page it will ask you for WLAN Security Settings. Do the same as you did with your PS3 again, so go to WPA-PSK (AES)

9) It's going to ask you for the WPA Key. We made that earlier on the PS3, remember? My example was doggcatt so I'm going to put that in for my WPA key. Next, choose Easy. It will then ask you for a connection name, choose whatever you want. I did PS3 again, but it doesn't matter.

10) Almost done. On your PS3 go to Network > Remote Play. The PS3 should say "Connect the PSP(tm) System using a remote play connection."

11) On your PSP, go to Network > Remote play. Pick the new connection setting you just made (mine was called PS3)

12) That's it! Your PS3 should say "Remote play in Progress" and your PSP should be at the PS3's window. I Hope this helped some people!

If you're on a router, your IP may change a digit. BUT, when you open up Red Kawa Media Center, the IP displayed there will be the IP you want to put in your PS3 browser. BTW, It's http:// not http//: is that the problem you were having?

So, put http://localhostip:8192 in your ps3 browser url.

localhostip being the numbers that show up on your Media Center browser.

I'm having a similar problem; I type in http://localipaddress:8192, and I get either a network error, or a Page cannot be displayed message. I'm not typing anything incorrectly, I've tried several times- I dunno what to do :(

Edit: I've also made sure that the file server was running and everything.

I got the message network error/ Page cannot be displayed message this afternoon. I did a power cycle on my router and it fixed it. When I got these errors the first thing I did was try to go to the Playstation Store. That gave me an error telling me to check Settings>Network Settings. One of those icons is to do a network test. When that failed I suspected the router.

I can connect, but don't see any of the files that I put into the folders as options to select on my PS3. Did I do something wrong? When I click on a folder I have to click on the "....." option then I always see the same choises, regardless of where I am. Any help would be great

Looks like you guys are having a big of a problem with your ip address settings.

In a typical home with a router, say a linksys or a netgear, your router is setup as a DHCP server which means it automatically assigns an ip address for you.

Example:
You are probabably on 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x. If yours is something different then you probably set it up yourself and this doesn't apply to you.

Your router is most likely 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. The router will automatically assign you an address which normally follows the last used number so in this case : 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.1.2. I know linksys routers start at 100 so you would be 192.168.1.100.

Anyways, if you want to get the ip address of your computer/server (wherever your ps3 media center is installed)

go to Start --> Run
type in "cmd" without the quotes
you will get a black command prompt window with:

c:\documents and settings\admin>_

type in "ipconfig" without the quotes.

look for your ip address. it look like:

Ip Address.........................192.168.1.100
subnet mask ....................255.255.255.0
Gateway............................192.168.1.1

Take that ipaddress and go to your ps3 and use it in the address as:

http://192.168.1.100:8192

*setting your ip address manually.

First, get your Complete IP information- like this:

go to Start --> Run
type in "cmd" without the quotes
you will get a black command prompt window with:

c:\documents and settings\admin>_

type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes.

look for your ip address. it look like:

Ip Address.........................192.168.1.100
subnet mask ....................255.255.255.0
Gateway............................192.168.1.1
DNS Servers......................68.94.156.1
68.94.157.1
NOTE: do not use this information as this is an example of what mine looks like... yours will most likely be different.

Now write all the info down.

Go to control panel and then network connections. Find you connection that you use. If you use a ethernet cable to get online, you will look for "Local Area Connection." If yours is wireless you will look for "Wireless connection."

Right click on your connection and go to properties.

A window will pop up and in the middle are items. Scroll down the last item and it should be "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)"

Highlight it(DO NOT UNCHECK IT) and then click Properties.

You will be at a window that will have
"obtain ip address automatically" - this will probably be selected.

Choose the 2nd option which is "use the following ip address:

Here you will be filling in all the information you wrote down BUT it is advised that for your IP address, you choose a different number. You dont have to but i would advise it as because you are setting it manually, the router may automatically assign your ip address to another computer and u will have ip conflicts. So, what number should u choose? I'd say look at the number you have, and pick something alot higher but not higher than 255, cause the max is 255 so you can't go higher than 192.168.1.255. Do not choose 192.168.x.1 either cuse thats probably your router already.

Example:

Your ip address is : 192.168.1.102.
I'd probably recommend u using: 192.168.1.202

Input the rest of the fields such as the Gateway and the Subnet. Then do the same for the DNS Server. If you only have 1 DNS server such as "192.168.1.1" then leave the "Alternate DNS server" empty.

Click okay all the way out and you are done!

You have successfully manually set your ip address of your computer so that it never changes!

Update: Tried setting IP address manually, expected it to work, and it still isn't. :(

I'm not sure what's wrong...I'm not typing anything incorrectly, I disabled my firewall, manually changed IP address; it still won't work.

I guess I'll just wait for the new version to come out and try it again then.

Its probably because you havn't opened the port 8192. I have done it although It still isn't working for me. Any ideas anyone?

Is there a reason why when I transfer my video files to MP-4 the quality is not that good?

Zephry0
01-23-2007, 10:48 AM
Well, it should be at least Medium Quality(MQ), at least. It shows perfect on my tv monitor.

If you havent done this, you should put your conversion settings to this:

No problem, I'm glad to help :D.

Well, the quality problem should be solved with those settings. I did it exactly as shown and I got good quality, so good luck.

Without even using Red Kawa myself I think I see what you're doing wrong here.

Try http://<your ip address>:8192 instead.

Beats me. I don't know the answer.

I can get as far as you did, plus one: after it buffers for a little while, the PS3 plays the video from my PC
But I'm not trying to play the video from my PC.
I'm trying to save the video file from my PC to the PS3.

Nomatter what I try, on the PS3 or the PC, I can find no option to do that.
However, I am able to do something goofy: save the file from PC thru the PS3 and back to the desktop my PC. How crazy is that? Nevermind, I don't care.

What I care about is, "Once I see the files on my PC showing up on the PS3 display, and I navigate to the file I want to save from the PC to the PS3, and I have that file highlighted on the PS3 display, how do I save the damn thing there on the PS3 (rather than just watch it)?"

Anybody know? (I feel like I'm *this* close!)
