Hi all, I have been doing the current conversion from DVD Vob's of 4:3 & 16:9 using the full screen 408x272 setting. I know whenever I convert a vob that it will give me what I want including full screen with black bars if need be.

Using a 2.39:1 aspect ratio avi movie won't give me that, it'll give the 'stretch' appearance which I hate. Is there any settings I should use in order for the converted movie to give the full screen ratio with black bars for an 2.39:1 avi movie?

Any help, suggestion or settings would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

In theory you would create a profile and add padding to the top and bottom to bring your source resolution up to a 16x9 aspect ratio, unfortunately padding appears to be broken in the current build. Rather than add the values to the source frame size, it adds it to the output frame size, making it an invalid frame size for the psp.

For example, I tried to pad some 4x3 dvd content within 16x9 frame (pillarboxing it) so the crude scaler in the psp wouldn't kick in. in this case the correct padding value should be 120 on left and right. Instead of padding the source frame, it generated an output file with a 720x272 frame size (480+120+120).

Until they fix the bug, you won't be able to pad it and maintain the aspect ratio. The best you could do is crop a 16x9 frame out of the video. you just have to do some math to determine the crop values. You'll lose part of the frame, but you'll maintain the aspect ratio.

I don't think you can have a 4x3 full screen aspect. Ideally, this would be 368 x 272 (taking into account 16 pix chunks for mpeg). If you make a movie that size the psp won't recognize it, even though your computer will play it fine.

However, if you pad the size to equal a 480 x 272 movie with black bars on the sides, the psp plays that fine. I believe this is more a firmware issue, than anything else. Making the movie be this size with black bars adds very little to the file size since it's just black in those areas.

Anyway, thought this might help. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know how you were able to get a 368 x 272 movie to play on the psp at full res, no stretching...

I'm able to get the padding to work fine. Here's my settings for 2.39

Width: 480
Height: 208
Aspect Ratio: Original
Framerate: Original
Max Resoltution: 480 x 272
Padding Top: 32
Padding Bottom: 32

Leave everything else as default. This should get you there.
