I've had the same issue, not sure how to fix it... I have a 42" and there's a lot of black space. Here's what I have tried so far:

Adjusting the default to 1080p 1 pass. in the settings.

This didn't work, so I am trying the 1080p 2 pass next. Will post again with the results. If anyone knows what this issue is and how to fix it, please let us know.

Thanks

Okay, here's what I found out....

The problem that we are dealing with here is an aspect ratio problem, and there is a thread on it a little below this one...

Anyway, here is what the person with the problem said:

no matter WHAT setting I have this set to, it ALWAYS converts to 4:3, not 16:9, which in itself isnt a problem, But just more distracting on a widescreen tv.

Maybe I'm mising something. Any ideas?

I Created a new profile, set to 16:9, and on the 720i setting Height 720 - width 1080 (not avisync, as I cant get that to convert AT ALL, after like 3 seconds it says complete, though its not in my Converted Video folder) and when I try it, it stays at the 4:3 ratio. - Posted by dark dante

And here is the answer:

I left all my settings on original except for the aspect ratio, selected 16:9 turned off auto resize. then i noticed this little button near the bottom that said save settings, which i hadn't noticed the previous times while changing my settings, so i clicked it and then converted my file and watched it in proper format for my tv. - Posted by evotek

I will be forever greatful if this fixes that 4:3 problem.
I will be trying this out when I get off of work as I have a lot to encode. This particular
problem was hanging me up. The video played fine on the computer in the proper ratio. It was when I streamed them from a media center box that the problem would happen. I had to use my zoom feature to make the video fill the screen which caused pixelation. Why does the ratio work on a computer but not on a media center extender..? Weird.

Was curious will it fix the 4:3 problem if you leave the aspect ratio to original and just uncheck auto resize..? I will test out when I get home just to see.

I will also post back if this fixes the problem. I haven't read anything about this change fixing the problem except from the person who posted the fix. So I assume it's working for everyone. What do we do if this doesn't fix the problem...?

What would be the real purpose of this auto resize option..? To maybe watch something that is widescreen on a full screen TV..? Like Pan & Scan..? Or am I off the track....

I will post back if this fixes my issue. Thanks much for finding it. :)

Okay.
If you leave the aspect ratio setting to original and leave auto resize unchecked the problem remains. It still puts it in a 4:3 box. You have to set the aspect ratio to 16:9

I have also done some more observation on this. The 16:9 feature will get the job done but it is not the original aspect ratio that the movie was encoded in. If you want the true aspect ratio you'll need to encode it with another program.

Good Program and very fast.
Recommended if you don't mind aspect ratios
