I might be missing something really obvious here but what the hell! If I have a 4.36gig 720p movie at 4077kbps and convert using the 720p settings am I not reducing the quality of the original file? The resulting file would now be 3.18gig at 3072kbps. I'm still amazed at the quality of the converted movie but am worried I'm losing around a quarter of the information during the process. Any help/info would be appreciated because, frankly, I haven't got a clue what I'm doing. Hope this makes sense- Thanks.

If it looks just as good who cares, smaller files are good :)
Some of it is probably due to the audio taking up less space, probably 5.1 AC3 at 384kpbs in the original file whereas the converted video will have 2 channel audio at 160kbps.

You're right, I know. I had thought about the reduction in audio bitrate and, as you say, I should just enjoy what I have but I can't help feeling I'm missing out on more and for what could be a simple reason. Smaller files are better too but seeing as it's gonna be banged onto a DVD that's not too much of a concern. Jesus, I was happy with AVI's last week-gotta get a sense of perspective! Cheers
