Been a lurker here for awhile, first time poster.

I have had major problems converting HD .mkv files to ATV format. It would go through the entire process and create the file, but then it couldn't add the file to iTunes, and if I tried to open the movie in Quicktime, I would get the dreaded "Error -39 I/O Error" notification so I couldn't even see if the file was valid. After many searches here and on Google, I ran across a page last night that said the person was having the same error, and they were also using Vista32 (same as me.) He traced it to an issue with ReadyBoost (the caching feature in Vista that allows you to use a USB thumbdrive for faster system caching.)

So, I removed the USB drive that I was using for ReadyBoost, and the problem is solved. I can now play movies that I couldn't play before, they add to iTunes with no problem, and play flawlessly (and beautifully) on my ATV. Once synced to the ATV, I can add the thumbdrive back to the computer and run normally. I simply have to take it out when encoding, adding and syncing.

The problem (most likely) has to do with Quicktime/iTunes wanting to load the movie onto the ReadyBoost cache (and the file sizes are all larger than the cache itself, hence the error.)

Anyway, I wanted to pass this along for any of those out there lurking with this problem. It has greatly enhanced my appreciation for Videora and for the ATV.
