I just downloaded PS3 Video 9 and have been trying to get it to convert AVI files. I fill out the profile the best I can and point to the file to convert but all it does when I depress START is go to completion almost immediately. I've been fussing with different settings like bitrate, resolution etc but no luck. I've used other converters before but can't seem to understand what this program wants. I trying to convert home videos to upload to PS3. Thanks

Two possible problems. First and most likely is the source file. What kind of file are you trying to encode? Resolution and other stats would be helpfull.
Another problem is a problem I had when I first started using Video 9. Even though you can change settings you need to make sure you save those settings in the profile. After saving, the new settings will be used to encode the video.

I’m converting AVI files 640x480 which come right out of the camera. Example used is 72 MG one minute 5 seconds long.
I did get one file to convert using your suggestion about saving the profile first (Depressed Save Profile under Convert > Encoding Profiles tab). However, when copied to the PS3 it said it would not play. So, I began trying different profiles. All tries except the one, complete conversion in less than one second although I depressed Save Profile. Now I can’t repeat the one that converted, too many tries I guess.
As an example here is the latest attempt
On the Encoding Profile tab I have set
Device PS3
Profile MPEG-2 PS 2 mbps
Name (same)
Encoder PS3 1-pass-FFmpeg (6730)
Codec MPEG-2PS
Mode CBR
Bitrate 5120
Framerate 29.97
Aspect Ratio 4:3
Resolution 1280 x 720
Audio Codec MP2
CBR
132
stereo
22500
