The conversion compresses the file. I wanted a perfect compression without losing any quality, the quality loss from the 302mb avi to the 171mb mpeg4-avc has a horrible ammount of quality loss. How could I avoid this.

Comparing File size is not a way to tell lost quality. Yes there is lost data but then the PS3 dose not support the few Lossless video codecs out there and those file sizes would be huge.
Don't use the one-click convert till you know you have the proper encoder setup. Never know if you installed the wii profiles as well you might end up with a wii file instead of a ps3 file.
watch the file encoded with PS3 Video 9's default profiles. the AVC one should be good for it's file size, I converted a xvid encoded avi with that and have little change in size (178meg AVI vs 152meg AVC)
If you have problems talk here I think some of us have done some video encoding with the PSP and will be willing to give our ideas.
Also if you have time feel free to play with the settings by going into the Encodeing Progiles tab of the Convert section. Make sure you pick your base profile (I would start with avc for size and quality) click the new profile, change a setting like increasing the Bitrate in CBR mode name the profile to something like AVC test 1024 and encode the video with that.. for a smaller file size you can decrease those numbers. Now for the VBR I can't remember how the q numbers go if low is better quality at a higher file size or what (One of the reasons over night I am running my own tests)
Also to save where and tear on your memory card I would watch the videos on your computer at full screen not it is not 100% what you will see on your tv because of screen size and rez. but you should say any major bleeding or other issues before you get it to your PS3.
On a off topic note I also plan on trying to install linux on the PS3 and see how local area networking and video playback work.

I can't find a new profile button. I use psp video 9 and I love it, but I can't figure out how to use anything but the default profiles on the PS3 version.

To improve video quality, please create a new video profile with a higher bitrate. Remember that better quality means bigger filesizes.
The "New Profile" button can be found by clicking the "Convert" button in the menu bar, going to the "Encoding Profiles" tab and clicking the the "New Profile" button in the top right hand corner of the tab.
