As of now I have my home wireless network set up brilliantly throughout my house. I have 5 computers being able to access the internet wirelessly in addition to my newest toy the PlayStation 3. However I'm a college student and I'm only home for a couple more weeks and I was worried about my loss of internet usage on the PS3 because I will be moving it into my dorm room.

My college does have free wireless internet but it is not accessible from my dorm room. My questions is if its possible in some way to connect to my internet at home through some sort of IP address or anything of that nature? I'm pretty familiar with computers but fairly new to wireless networking. Also if this isn't possible. My dorm has two network lines running into it currently connected to my roommate and my computer. Is it also possible to use my own computer, connected to the network line, as a router or gateway to the PS3? Hopefully there is some solution to access the internet wirelessly on my PS3 at college.

I realize its very possible to run an ethernet cable from the wall to the PS3, but that would be inconvenient because It would require a long cable very capable of being tripped over and it means at least one of the two computers would not be able to access the internet, not to mention the trouble it would cause to switch back and forth from connecting the cable to a computer or to a PS3.

Any help would be delightful. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you would gain by using your home computer as a proxy through your college internet, especially since you would still have to get your PS3 connected somehow. Regaurdless of that, it would be very slooow and generally useless.

If you have two network cards in your computer or a network card and a wireless card, then yes you can create a adhoc, or p2p network using your computer as a gateway for your PS3. Look into Internet Connection Sharing in Windows. It'll take some configuring on both Windows and the PS3's connection settings, but it's not hard once you get the hang of it.

And just so you know, you're not missing anything with not being able to access your school's wireless. Most (I know mine does) block all ports on the wireless except for port 80...so gaming and everything else is rendered useless.

Hope that helps.

I have a similar set up working for my Wii.
The Wii won't connect to the university's free wireless because it's managed by a VPN, so I set up my pc to run as a software access point (SoftAP).

I have a Ralink wireless card running as a SoftAP for the Wii (and my housemate's 360 if he gets wireless), which is essentially my LAN. I get to the uni internet via a USB wireless stick. The Wii is fine with this set up, but it means that my pc has no IP address on my LAN.
I'm thinking the solution is another wireless adaptor to connect my pc to my LAN and the run the media center. Obviously this is a fit of a fiddle, so would it be possible to somehow screw the computer into thinking it exists on my LAN without havning to pay money. Paying time and effort is assumed!
