Don't have an answer for you but can say I have not been able to convert AVI files taken with my camera either. When you say it didn't work, by that do you mean it completed almost immediately? That's what mine did, no matter what settings I used.
I now have to convert the AVIs to WMV using Windows Movie Maker first then convert the WMV to MPG. It works but takes too much time and I lose quality.
Some, who are much more knowledgeable than I, say that AVI is just a container and what's inside may vary such that PS3 Video 9 may like or dislike the contents. If it doesn't like it, it errors off. I think that's the situation we both find ourselves.

I wouldn't say you have to convert to WMV but you may have to consider converting to something other than AVI, until Red Kawa makes changes to their program. Until they do we're stuck with files that won't work. Converting to something that will work, is our only option unless we want to purchase a converter that will.
This forum doesn't seem to be monitored very well by Red Kawa otherwise they'd be asking us to send logs of the errors in order to resolve the issue. AVI files are very common today as they are created by lots of video cameras.
I'm thinking about giving MP4 Converter a try

There's a free trial period before you have to purchase. If it'll convert my AVIs it would be worth it.
