Hi,

I wanted to know what would be the best combination for converting an AVi to MPEG-4 to achieve the best quality output possible ?

What's the main difference between MPEG-4 PS and MPEG-4 AVC ?

What about the Mode, CBR, FQ-VBR, A-VBR and QC-VBR ?

Thanks

mp4 SP sometimes works (PS3 is able to play it) and sometimes it says unsupported format.

AVC has always worked for me for converting AVI's.

as from another thread, this guys settings workhttp://www.redkawa.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=4&d=1167498439

i usually set the bit rate to at least 1024 for MP4 AVC.

mp4 compared to mp2, mp2 "blocks up" more in image at lower bit rates compared to mp4.

any reasons why MPEG-4 AVC takes about 3-4 times longer then MPEG-4 SP ? The output file size is about the same so i don't think it's because of compression...

Thanks

The output file size is about the same so i don't think it's because of compression...AVC is a more modern / advanced version of MPEG-4. It produces superior results in the same bandwidth, or comparable results in less bandwidth. It also requires far more computation, hence the longer encoding times.

If you are just watching on a 20" monitor, you may not notice a difference.

As you saw from my other thread you can see my settings for videos. Even with my Dual Core HT computer it still takes quite a bit of time to convert a video. Be patient. The results are well worth the wait. I prefer AVC over SP. When I converted a video in both formats I noticed much less pixelization in blander colors such as grey or brown. In fact AVC to me looks almost identical as a DVD.

Ok, i copied his settings almost exactly, but I was wondering wut does the "-async 1 -threads 4" mean down at the bottom where it says custom flags??

-async 1 takes longer, but takes more work to do.
-threads 4 spawns 4 threads instead of 1 for a duel core HT processor to increase the speed and use more of the processor.

Dont use the threads option unless you have more than one core or a hyper threading CPU.

If I'm watching converted MPEG-4 AVC files on my PS3 through my HDTV, what's a good Video Bitrate (kbps) to convert by for CBR? What Audio Bitrate should I use?

I'm watching 1280x720 files on my 720p/1080i HDTV.

I plan on converting a lot of 700mb files, and opt for high quality without sacrificing too much space. My aim is to have converted files reach a 1.4gb mark.

I'm right with you man.. i have a 42" samsung hd and i've been spending hours and hours trying to find better settings. i downloaded Heroes episode 15 and Crank.. i converted heroes one from default settings and then again to the highest of everything it took 5 hours to convert.. results were EXACTLY THE SAME, they both sucked so i'm messing with some other ones for crank, bringing the kibrate (kbps) to the highest also making NO difference.. i thought it might just look like that cause of the tv being too big so i hooked up my pc directly to my tv and crank looked 100 times better.. mostly no pixalation which is what really sucks when i convert. i'm gonna try putting 250 in the "Keyframe Interval" in the settings like XerXes suggested see if that makes a difference, even thou i'm starting to think that until playstation doesn't come out with some type of codec update to watch XVID we're not gonna see what we're expecting to see.. I hope i'm wrong, i guess i'm gonna have to use my pc to watch downloaded movies :( either way if someone found a better convetion settings i think it'll, be great to share them, i think what happens is that when people find the settings they're looking for they just don't come back to the forums.. i mean why bother.. i'll try the 250 and lower bitrate maybe higher fps see is that makes a difference if it doesn't then as annoying as it is i'll just use my pc :0(

Please remember that DVDs and stuff run at a much lower resolution than what the PS3 is capable of. If you set your video display to "original" you'll notice that the videos will look normal but the screen is smaller on your PS3. DVDs are actually running at 720x480 and the PS3 can run at 1920x1080 and I think higher too, and when you have a video set to 720x480 and go to original, you'll see how much black space there is. This is assuming you're using the PS3's HDMI cable on an HD TV, not a tube tv. I'll tell you, there's A LOT of black space. What you're doing is effectively stretching out the picture and the PS3 is trying to fill in those gaps and unfortuantly, it will look worst. The only way to achieve the closest to original quality is to have the developers of the movie PUT it in that resolution and then us encode it. Cranking up the bitrate and such won't make it any better. It'll help but it can only do so much and any more will just eat up more space with very little to no improvements and a HUGE waste if your time so there's a fine line between saving space and getting the best possible quality (which = the original movie you have on hand). I just stick with the attachment picture in this thread and it does fine.

Also it probably looks better on your TV because if the resolution you're running on your computer. I'm sure if you set the resolution to match what you're TV is actually capable of you'll get the same degrading result.

Can anyone tell me when using MPEG-4 AVC format is there a way to have it 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 1:1 because my animes subtitles are getting cut off from each side of the screen and there is a better settings for it also best quality settings.

As of right now there isn't a profile that will change it to 16:9 or 4:3 unless you change the codec from a MPEG4 to an MPEG2 then you get those ratios.

well i do this

except my bitrate is 4096 it looks great, ignore the boxes/numbers these are part of a guide i make for a friend.
say what you will about not being 1280x720 or 1920x1080 but they look good.
