I took a 640x480 AVI I shot with my digital camera, and converted it with the default MPEG-4 AVC 768kbps settings. The AVI converted, but it runs at least double speed or more. What am I doing wrong?

I should have your problem, runs too fast? I'd take that. Actually the 640 x 480 avi that comes out of my camera PS3 Video 9 can not convert. It just goes to completion in about 1 second and leaves in a converted file 0 KB in size. Consider yourself lucky. What kind of camera are you using. My Fujifilm evidently uses a codex this program can not handle. I have to convert to WMV using Windows Movie Maker then convert to Mpeg.
Quality goes down and it takes way too much time.

My camera is a Canon SD500.

I'm having the same exact problem with my video running twice as fast as it should and the audio is not working. I haven't found a solution so far.

Have you tried changing from the default to say; retaining the same resolution as the source, 640 x 480, same framerate as the source (Input or 30), mode CBR to see if that will fix it.
If one of you decide to try changing the profile from the default don't forget to SAVE PROFILE at the bottom before beginning the conversion.

My guess would be the framerates. Most cameras run their recording at roughly 15 FPS due to hard ware limitation and battery saving blah blah blah. What's happening is you're essentially speeding your videos up from 15 FPS to 30 FPS so the video is running at double speed while the Audio is running at normal speed. Change the encoding profile (of your choice) so that it is set to something close to 15 and not set as Input.
