Introduction:

Now that Media Center X (MCX) is installed and running your multimedia files must be placed in specific folders in order to be accessible within MCX. The following list indicates the folder location for each media type that MCX supports.

Folder Locations for Media files:

My Videos
Place FLV videos in:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Media Center\software\Video\videos

Mac/Linux: install_dir/software/Video/videos

Important Note: MCX can only play video files in the FLV format. If your videos are not in this format you can convert them by using the Red Kawa Video Converters (http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/).

My Music
Place MP3's in:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Media Center\software\Music\music

Mac/Linux: install_dir/software/Music/music

My Pictures
Place Pictures in:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Media Center\software\Pictures\images

Mac/Linux: install_dir/software/Pictures/images

My Files
Before download files to the PS3 HD – You MUST edit the program settings before downloading!

For security reasons, you must specify which directories you want to allow downloading from. By default, you will only be allowed to download files from your C:\Documents and Settings directory which includes:

My Documents
Desktop
My Videos
etc

If you try to download from any other directory that is not specified you WILL get a Forbidden or 404 error.

To add the directory you want to download from, click the Settings button at the bottom of any of the File Server pages.

You should do this on your PC as it will be a lot quicker and not on your PS3.

It wasn't difficult, but for someone who is really new to these things here is something I think is missing from you tutorial. You don't mention that you have to launch your browser and then, on the PS3, navigate to the IP address in the address bar of the browser. This is not real intuitive and should be mentioned.

I also have a question: Why do I have to launch the browser? Isn't there a "lighter weight" way of running the server component. Perhaps one that I could simply leave running most or all of the time?

no, you don't ahve to run the browser link. but at a minimum you have to run,
the file lableled PS3 Media Center X(tray).

an easy way to auto launch this is to copy the link in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Red Kawa\PS3 Media Center X folder labeled PS3 Media Center X (Tray)
to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder, then every time you start your comp it will launch the server

Didn't really see a point in starting a thread for this, and I couldn't find a thread for this already going, so I'll put it here.

Thank you very much for this program. Works like a charm. All your hard work is very appreciated.

i'm with him - i don't see any way to add download permissions to directories for files in the My Files part with the OS X server/client. Is there a way to edit one of the text files to do it?

I'm not sure I understand your question when you say directories for files in the My Files part. To add/change/edit Start and Approved directories you begin with the blue Start page and:
click Settings
then Software on the left
then Edit Software on the left
then the underlined Click Here on the right

Sorry if I missed your point of concern.

This is my situation. I have a PC that is triple booted (XP, Vista, Ubuntu FF) and I have a separate HD devoted to all of my media (MP3's, Vids, Pics, etc.). I cannot see myself constantly copying the MP3s that I want to stream to my C (XP) drive and then deleting them and copying others there depending on my mood. (I have ALOT of MP3s).

Is there a way (now or in the future) that I can either put a shortcut in the C drive for the MP3s, vids, etc I wish to play or have the Media Center point to my Media drive like the File Server can?

My guess is that that will be configurable in the future.
But in the mean time why not boot up in Ubuntu install Media Center X and create a symlink (with the command "ln"). That should solve your problem as well!

Is it possible to add picture from other directory rather than copying picture folder to C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Media Center\software\Pictures\images? Let say from D:\pictures

I'll second that. Is there a configuration file we could change to do this? C drive being a system drive is not where serious PC users would put their data.
Thanks.

So .. type this http://your-ip-address:8192

Note: I'm not saying your a dummy.. just don't type the words your-ip-address
Only saying because ive seen people do it....

I was able to get mine connected and view it.. now im just trying to get my videos over to test.. im converting a movie to .flv as im typing this.. let you all know how it goes in a few ..

Then I might do a Mac tutorial if i can get this all done up right..

I have been trying to get this to work, and I can see all of my files now when I click the "Files" menu. What I can't do is download them- I get:

HTTP ERROR: 401

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS

RequestURI=/software/Files/download.jsp

What am I doing wrong? I'm on Mac OS X.
