after some trial and error i found a profile setting that works for me.

This profile is for DVD videos that are 852 x 480.

i initially was using videora iphone converter but the file size was too large, the videos were only 480 x 270, and there were black bars on the top and bottom making the video even smaller.

i uninstalled videora iphone converter and downloaded and installed the videora apple TV converter.
i played around with the profile settings and here is what i came up with

640 x 360 res = so if you ever use the tv out feature of the iphone the quality should still be ok. playing the video on the desktop and switching to full screen still looks good.

896 kbps = a one minute converted video has a file size of 6700 kb. so a 144 min movie (2h24m) would be around 960 mb. A 93 min movie (1h33m) would be 620 mb.

the black bars are removed to fit the whole screen without changing the videos aspect ratio by cropping all sides (not just the top and bottom)

here are the settings

you can also cut the credits to make the file size smaller. harry potter is 8000+ seconds including the credits. the credits start after 7800 seconds.

here is a 10 second sample video of harrypotter OTP. click here. (http://www.filefactory.com/file/d67fde/) you can drag to itunes and sync with iphone without any problems, no black bars and good quality.

for videos without black bars set all the crop values to 0.

I made some changes to the crop values.

Top:50
bottom:50
left:88
right:88

This will take out the black bars and not change the original aspect ratio.

I would like to thank midiman for explaining how the cropping works.

for the framerate=set to original instead of 29.97
the video plays smoother when framerate is set to original.

I changed the Framerate interval to 240 because the videos usually convert with a framerate of 59.97. So 60 x 4 = 240

For DVD videos that are 720 x 480 you can use this same profile. Just change the resolution
Width:640
Height:426

And also change the
Crop values(if you don't want the blackbars)
Top:50
Bottom:50
Left:74
Right:74

All standard DVDs have 720x480 video. The question is... what is the aspect ratio of the movie. If the movie is 16:9 or 1.85 which is kinda close but not the same, the movie will be displayed on a 4:3 display with thinner black bars than 2:35 movies or (if it's anamorphic) will be stretched to fit a 16:8 display without any bars because there really are no bars encoded in the video. If the source is 2:35 the black bars are actually encoded in the video and the movie will appear with letterboxing on either type of display.

you have a point there midiman

I made some more changes to the crop values
50 didn't completely remove the blackbars

Here's the new crop values I used
top:64
bottom:64
left:114
right:114

The DVD I used was 852 x 480.
iPhone can only accept 640 width.

So I used 640 x 360. They have the same ratio, 1.77

I started cropping the top and bottom and ended up with the 64 as the value to remove the black bars. 64 x 2 = 128 pixels removed from height.

360-128 = 232 height

640
___ = x / 232

360

x= 232(640)/360
= 412

So the res should be 412 x 232

Now to crop the sides of the width
640-412=228

Divide 228 by 2=114
use this value to crop both left and right fields

I dont mind black bars on an HDTV that is more than 42".

But for the iphone its a different story. For me, with the black bars, the small screen of the iphone just appears even smaller. That's why I just prefer to get rid of them.

I'm glad that I'm just worrying about profile settings. I can convert videos with no problem now. When I started using videora I couldn't get a single video to completely convert. It took me the whole week last week to get it right.

The encoding duration field solved my problem with the converter encoding past the length of the movie. Now I can even remove the credits to lower the file size.
