OK so it would seem FAT32 is limited to 4GB file sizes. I take it that whatever format the PS3 uses may similarly be limited to that same 4GB.

I want to convert and copy over movies onto my PS3, the ones I like and would probably watch more then the others. As of yet I still only have the 60GB that came with the PS3 and have just put 4GB of converted TV show episodes on it.

I was thinking it was a great idea until it hit me of how they wont transfer over due to the FAT32 part (or even if the system isn't limited my usb HDD is due to having to be FAT32.

Then it hit me that I really don't want movies taking 4GB per whack anyhow. Or at least is if I COULD get them over there without taking that big of a space hit per DVD then I'd like to.

I'm doing some playing around with a few different programs as we speak.

Any thing I should know? Has this been gone over before? Can it be done/not be done?

You can click on my siggy on how to put your DVDs to your PSP/PS3. Just take some side routes like using PS3Video9 instead of PSPVideo9.

Yes FAT32 is limited to 4gb files and for USB drives, it's good up to 32Gb worth of storage, which in my opinion isn't terrible but would be nice if the PS3 did NTFS.

For me, I've been putting videos into PSP and PS3 for about 1 1/2 years + now. The method on my siggy will require lots of reading and understanding how the DVDs work and such but once you get it down, the only waste of your time will be the encoding process. Your biggest time saver if you plan on doing multiple movies will be Virtual DUBs job processing, which is basically batching. You're preparing all your movies and then hit the start button to encode them all.

Nusakan please edit your post. Fat32 has a file size limitation of 2 terabytes this is common knowledge. There are many programs out there that allow you to fully format fat32 under windows. Again this is very common knowledge.

WoWchamp I would recommend purchasing an external that is already formatted to fat32 & you will find most are. This is primarily to be compatible with other operating systems besides windows. A 500gb already formatted to fat32 can be had for cheap nowadays. I currently use a couple of 500gb externals that I swap between a Ps3 and Pc. Both have several hundred gb’s of mp4’s on them now.

For file size? or partition size? :)

Fat32 can go up to 2TB on partition size but iirc it's still under the restriction of 4gb on file size.

That I can’t answer what I can tell you is I have purchased 3 external HDD’s now all have been pre-formatted to fat32 & you can put as many mp4’s each of 4 GB or less that your HDD will hold. This would probably be Wowchamps best and easiest solution.

Nusakan is right. Earlier posts were talking about file size, not partition size.

XP and PS3 will understand any FAT32 drive bigger than 32 GB but you can't format a FAT 32 drive larger than 32 GB with XP's own formatting tool. If you do, it won't recognize the rest of the volume. It's true, if you buy one already formatted you'll be ok for the full volume or if you use another program to format.
