why is the converted file 3x bigger than my original file?

I am trying to convert a movie that is 700 mb, when it is finished it is 2gb...I used the default settings and its estimated file size was 623 mb...anyone know whats going on?

If the file is three times as big, you're encoding at three times the bitrate of the original.
