No idea at the moment. I don't even know how to do transfer from PC to PS3 yet. Would make my life easier to do transcoding testing on PS3Video9 if it was possible. I'm still learning how to do other stuff on it. If you point me to the correct location on how to do it I can get started on it as soon as i get home. It would save me a lot of time moving from my hard drive to my 6gb USB drive then to my PS3. I need to see if I can use my portible 40 hard drive (32GB partition Fat320) will be seen by my PS3. That would be even faster.
I installed Linux on it so far :D

Yes, it may very well be. I never thought about using a cable. Everyone on the forum seems to use Media Center X wirelessly. I know I do. I always thought it's function was to operate as a server to operate wirelessly.
If your real objective is to copy a file from PC to PS3 I may be able to help. Use a media like a DVD, CD, memory card or flashdrive to accomplish the transfer. On the PC copy the files to a folder called either MUSIC, VIDEO or PICTURE. If using a CD or DVD do a data burn. Walk it over to your PS3 and insert in disk drive or USB port. It will appear under XMB under the applicable type, i.e. video, photo etc. Triangle on the controller will give you options.
Post back if you have specific questions.
If your initial objective was to get the cable method to work, I'm sorry, haven't attempted it.

Ya I'm using my 40Gb (formatted to FAT32 so 32Gb partition) to transfrer now. I was hoping that I can map a network drive to my PS3 and do it from there. It isn't terrible or anything, just less plugging and unplugging.

there is a small utility called fat32format that will let you format your entire drive (larger than 32GB) in fat32...i have a 300gb drive i use to swap files w/my ps3...i don't remember the link though...let me know if ya can't find it.

i don't see why you couldn't use a crossover cable....all u'd have to to is setup the ip address for the ps3 and your computer manually..atleast i've done it with my old xbox before i had a router.
NOTE : I personally haven't tried this so i don't know if it works...i am pretty sure if there is a way i am pretty close hopefully :x
on the ps3 you would need to goto "Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings > Wired Connection > Address Settings Custom > Auto-Detect > IP Address Setting > Manual"
Then the settings would be
IP Address: 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask: (stays the same)
Router: 192.168.1.1
On your computer you would goto your control panel "Network Connection " choose the one that is your ethernet card and them right click on the card or connection that is using that card...goto properties and in the list box find "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)" should be near the bottom choose that and click on the "Properties" button. Fill in this
IP Address: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: (stays the same)
Router: 192.168.1.1

That's all fine and everything, but then how would you connect to your PS3? :D I can do it with my modded x-box as well because it does file sharing. It's nice that they can ping each other but that won't help you to transfer file.
PS3 on the other hand, doesn't have an option anywhere to enable or disable it. It isn't as easy as the PSP where all you have to do is connect a usb cable to it and enable the USB mode and BOOM your PSP is now assigned a drive letter on your Computer.
:D
To me it isn't a big deal right now since I can just transfer stuff 32gb at a time using a USB hard drive.

Well I have found it handy to use my 500GB hard drive as a medium. I used Norton Partition Magic and it will allow you to format at FAT32 partition up to 190GB. So that other utility a guy mentioned above (fat32format) would be optimal in this situation. I don't know that you map a network drive, but I will try and let you know if it works. I order for your PS3 to recognize any file you put on the drive you must do 1 of 2 things: stick the files in a folder with all caps VIDEO, MUSIC, or PICTURES. Or your other option is to just stick the files on a drive and then go to the respective category on your PS3 and the press the triangle button and click display all. That will do the trick.
I don't think there is any support (via Crossover) for the PS3 yet. This is because it would have to interface with a microsoft product and I don't think Bull would like that LOL. I could be wrong, but you'd want to buy a wireless router and go wireless anyway. It would cost you less than $50 to purchase a Linksys wireless router, unless you have the core version PS3. Hope this helps.

Yeah, after you set up the two IP addresses manually you still have to use a server to access the files from the ps3 browser... so try red kawa file server and it should work...... also, i dont think the fact that you are using a crossover cable changes anything, I mean, you can still hook up your router to your ps3 with it and run media center or file center and it porbably works.. all devices thee days know how to handle crossover cables if they are not supposed to be crossovers so you should be fine no matter how you do it, just as long as your PC and your Ps3 are on the same network (192.168.1.X) and you are running a server on the PC which you can access from the browser

I just hook my ipod up to my computer, put converted mp4 files on it, hook it up to the ps3 and bingo. From the ps3 interface, you can choose to play the media right off the removable device or copy it to the HD.
Unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge to set up my computer so my ps3 can access it
:( oh well. It works.
