View Full Version : Confused over widescreen aspect ratio conversions...

I have been getting reasonably good results first ripping a DVD with DVD Decrypter and then using PSPVideo9. If I convert a 1:85:1 film using 480X272, it takes up the entire PSP's screen and looks amazing.

But when it comes to 2:35:1/2:40:1 films, things get trickier and more confusing. I used 720X480 and it did indeed make the film take up the PSP's entire screen, but the video quality was poor...very pixelated and jaggy. I then tried to enter a custom setting of 480X320, which is the same ratio as 720X480, but I figured it might look better. However, the resulting file said "UNSUPPORTED DATA" when I transferred it to my PSP. I guess the PSP is very finicky about what aspect ratio's it will allow?? No idea why it could not play a 480X320 file.

If I use 480X272 on a 2:35:1 widescreen film, it does not take up the entire screen...still get sizable black bars. I did use 480X204 as a custom setting and the bars were somewhat reduced. I am under the understanding that you have to crop a 2:35:1/2:40:1 film in order for it to take up the entire screen at 480X272, correct?

Also, does anyone know the best conversion to decode a movie that has a 1:66:1 aspect ratio? Would 480X272 work here? 1:66:1 seems to be a very common resolution of widescreen films released now.

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Those black bars are essential to making the image look like it's supposed to... if you try to make a 2:35 image fill up at 1.85 display, the results get stretched... people get freakishly tall and skinny. Kinda just like when you watch them on your TV... supposed to be there.

Thanks Midiman...that is what I suspected. I just wasn't sure why the 480X320 converted file from PSPVideo9 came back with the 'unsupported data' on my PSP.

A true 480x320 screen is a 1.5 aspect ratio. Even a 1.85 movie should have SOME letterboxing displayed on it. I might suggest using 480x270.
