it appears the only way i can get the proper psp aspect ratio (480x272) for my converted videos is by using the 'current conversion' feature, as the videowizard always seems to make the video smaller. the only problem is, the file sizes always end up being really big, compared to others that i've just downloaded.

examples:
the matrix - 437mb
dumb & dumber - 342mb
south park movie - 265mb

yet, the video i'm converting (blade runner) is turning out to be 750+mb so far.

my question is, what is the best way to convert to an exact 480x272 size and bring the file size right down?

You need to drop bitrate if you wanna drop the file size, but that will drop the quality. This is a battle you can't really win on lower file size and higher quality. There's reasons on why file tend to be smaller than others. Note south park is 200 megs, it's a cartoon where there's nothing but simple shades of color, eg, one shade of color for skin or sky, which makes it super easy for the mp4 encoder to make the file size small. Live action video is harder to do because the skin of a person, for example, is more than one shades + if there's a lot of action going on, file size goes up even more. It's hard to explain but if you understand the algorithm of how encoding works, you'll understand why there can be a high variable in file size.
