View Full Version : Excessive Time When Converting?

I've got the newest version of Videora (I think it's 2.0.7, correct.) Anyway, I ripped a DVD using DVD Decrypter into a .VOB file. When I start to convert it, it says that the remaining time was to be about 10 to 12 hours long! I just ignored that, because I know that often, those 'remaining time:' dialog boxes never really tell the truth. I came back 9 hours later to find out that I still had 3 hours left...

And, when I go into the folder where the file is supposedly to be ripped to, even after 9 hours, it shows that the file is still at 0kb!! It shows that the file is there, but there isn't any information in it.

I know that previous versions that I've used never had any trouble (0.92) while converting. Or atleast, they never took this long. Generally they only took about 2 hours to convert a regular full-length DVD. Why is this taking so long in the new version?

My computer specs:

Dell Dimension 2350
Intel Celeron 1.8Ghz.
256MB PC2100 RAM
60GB Hard Drive
64MB Integrated Graphics Card.

Would those specs have anything to do with it? It never had trouble with the older version I used.

Several thoughts.

Newer versions of Videora use advanced features of some of the encoder codecs that DO take more time to yeild better results. You may be using one of the advanced profiles... I don't know

Your computer seems to be a little light on memory... and a 60G hard drive isn't exactly the size of Texas these days. People with iPods tend to fill a lot of hard drive space very quickly. It should be sufficient... but you fail to mention how much free space is available... which is a far more useful piece of information. If you're running thin on memory and hard drive space... things WILL crunch to a halt almost.

Did you LOOK at the ripped VOB file before you started to encode it? I don't waste any time on any file I haven't checked myself. You could be attempting to encode a bunch of gibberish that you would have seen if you watched at least a BIT of the VOB file prior to encoding.

You may be running into all three simultaneously. You may have picked up a virus or something that can slow any machine to a crawl. I don't know.

Try posting a console log.

I realize that my computer isn't exactly one of the newest things out there, but I still think that it should be able to hold up to something like this.

As far as memory goes, I think I'm alright. I have 2 computers at home. One has internet capability where I do most of my work, and multi-tasking. The other one is upstairs. That's the one that I'm using. The only thing that I ever do on that is either use iTunes, or watch a DVD. And of course, most recently, try to convert some videos onto my iPod. I think that because of all the things that I DON'T do, 256MB is quite enough. Also, of my 60GB Hard Drive, only 20GB is used up with Windows XP, iTunes, Cyberlink PowerDVD, Videora, and all my music. With 40GB, I've got enough to encode some videos. Also, if I ever run out of space, I can go downstairs and use that hard drive just to store some previously converted videos.

Actually, I did look at the .VOB file. CyberLink PowerDVD is one of the few players I've found that will play the actual .VOB file itself. It played fine; with no problems.

As far as viruses go, I am almost 100% sure that I've got no problems there. Like I said, there is no internet connection on that computer. The only way I 'could' have gotten any was from programs that have been brought upstairs from the other computer. From my experience though, iTunes is pretty clean. = )

Does this help anything?

A little bit. Make sure you have the lastest version and are using a few/no-options profile.

Version 2.07 encodes at exactly the same speeds as 0.92 for all profiles (except those with the words "Advanced" in their name). If you are using an older version (2.06 or earlier) then yes it will be a lot slower than 0.92 due to different profile settings.

Make sure you are using 2.07.
