View Full Version : Saved to Music?

Newbie Alert. Sorry.
I've had precisely two days experience of Red Kawa and from what I've seen so far I am extremely impressed that such a useful progam is available for free download. I've used the Media Center X and couldn't believe how simple it was to set up and use. Great interface too.

Development Note (I'm sure it's been mentioned before): There doesn't appear to be an option to fast forward or use the scroll bar on FLV movies through Media Center X.

Anyone know when MP3 will be streaming on PS3?

For fear of a harsh response to my question if it's been asked before (I've seen some shockers on here) my question is hopefully simple to answer. I've installed the File Server and PS3VIDEO9 software and have converted an .avi file to MPEG-4 AVC. I managed to find the converted file through my PS3 and selected it for download/transfer. All well and good so far. The file said that it was going to Save to Videos, it also had the option to Run in the Background (which didn't work), so I selected Start and let it do its thing. When the file finished downloading it said the it had been Saved to Music (?) and on looking at the XMB there it was in Music listed as an Unsupported File. Suffice it to say, the only was was deletion. I tried this 3 or 4 times with the same result.

Please Help.

That is weird. Before you delete it, will it allow you to click triangle and select Information to see what type of file got copied? Don't really have a solution but if it were me I guess I would try to copy it over using a media like a flashdrive, CD, DVD or memory card on the exact same file to see if it still happens. This method allows you to move on the XMB to VIDEO category before you copy. See if it says it's an Unsupported File this way.

PS3 attempts to keep types of files separate, Videos under Video, songs under Music, etc. I'm trying to see if the Unsupported File error is occurring because it's perceived as an unapproved file type for some reason or, more likely, because it's loaded under the wrong category (video under MUSIC). Do you have a media form you can use? If it copies and plays ok using this method, the big question will be whos fault is it placing an mp4 in the MUSIC category, Red Kawa or PS3 operating system

Thanks for reply.

I tried moving the same file from a USB Memory Stick and had the exact same problem. I created a file on the stick and called it PS3/MOVIES and put the mp4 file in it.

I put the stick in the PS3, moved to the Video Category on the XMB and looked in the PS3/Movies file, it reported "no files". However, I was able to view the files on the Memory Stick in the Music category; this time, however, it reported the file as "Unsupported Data". For the prupose of answering your question I then copied it across into the Music file and pressed the Info Triangle. It displays the file name then a load of dashes "-" in each further category and then the file size. I have a sneaking suspicion it may have something to do with the embeded codecs (?) in the originating file.

I tried the File Server transfer method again and the same thing happened. It said it was going to save the file in Video but it put it in Music instead.

Btw, for some reason the "Perform in Background" option worked this evening.

I'm trying another .avi conversion now and will tell you the results when I have them. Should I use the quick convert option in Video 9 or are there alternative profile settings that would be preferable/recommended?

I think you're right about the codec in the source file being the problem, very odd. Those dashes bother me. No wonder it didn't put it in the video section. Does this file show as mp4 on your PC?
If we're right and it's the codec that means this program isn't handling it correctly. But,if it's an mp4 on your PC then I'm not sure. Reguardless, you might want to try another converter program. I use a free one called Super. Google it to download. It has profiles you can preselect. I use two, one is called PS3 and the other profile is called MP4. Between the those two profiles and PS3 V9 I've had good success converting stuff.

As an .avi I can view the file just fine on my PC. When I convert it the file extension shows as being .mp4 but I've now discovered that when I try to play the file in Video9 it won't let me. I guess the codecs were/are the problem. Strange though that Video9 was able to recognise, or recognize (as it's a US forum :) ), the file as a video, converted it to .mp4, reported that it was going to be saved to VIDEO but then saved it in the MUSIC folder.

I've converted another .avi file to mp4 (using the same default settings) and I'm pleased to report that this one worked when I transferred it through the File Server program. I'll try one or two others and see how I get on. If I have any further problems I'll add to this post. If not, unless you want to know anything about the codecs in the file (and you can tell me how to extract the information), we can consider this thread closed.

Many thanks for your help and advice.
