Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the formats here, but I can convert a video I have into AVC format and play it with Quicktime, but the PSP refuses to play it. If I use the mpeg4 conversion it plays just fine.
The video is currently in an AVI container and is not compressed in any way, ie its in RAW format. Its 4:3 ratio. I even did a test conversion to 480x272 and it seemed to play ok in quicktime although it looked a little stretched, obviously, but that also would not play on my PSP.
Any help or is this a bug?

Eh, just because it plays on quicktime doesn't mean it will play on your PSP. Do you get like unsupported data or just not seeing it at all?
PSP does support AVC. Could it be because of the framerate? The PSP is very picky, you can have 29.97 fps but you cannot have 29.971. It's that picky.

If it was the frame rate that is the problem then wouldn't it also not play the MPEG4 conversion? The message is fairly generic, just says it cant play it

Well, if you, like me, made that movie yourself somehow (rendering it, for example) and you've got no sound: that's what the PSP doesn't like. It needs Sound and Video to play.

well i didn't quite say it was the problem of the framerate, it is because the PSP and PS3 is picky. It has to be real specific. If it's slightly off then it doesn't want to support it. As for sound, I don't know if it's that picky about it but I know for sure after doing so many trouble shooting that framerate is one culprit.
If anything, don't use "input" for the frame rate and set it to whatever is on the dropdown list. You do have to make sure that you're matching or at least be very close to the original video's frame rate, otherwise you might get it out of sync with audio. One way of finding out is using VLC to open the video and then look at the streaming and media properties.

It was sound. Thanks Tim. I used moviemaker to put a sound track on it and it converted no problems and played. Thanks a lot!
